Only .4 of 1% of restaurants in California use temporary staffing. I said to myself, “That’s an opportunity, but considering their tight profit margins, how can I make it affordable and enticing to restaurants while making it profitable to Acrobat Outsourcing?” After much research and customer feedback, we came up with a business model that is a “win-win” for all involved. We have developed services that allow restaurants to concentrate on pampering their patrons and providing great dining experiences for their guests.

During the recent SF Chef, Food and Wine in San Francisco, we launched Culinary Outsourcing Services. This is a bundle of services which enable restaurants to concentrate on growing their business and increasing their bottom line while outsourcing all the non revenue generating tasks to Acrobat. Whether it’s recruiting, staffing, payrolling, or secret shopping, we have you covered.

So many people have come to me wanting to pick up extra work at Acrobat Outsourcing but feel that they are not properly qualified. My answer to them is always believe in yourself and remember that perception is reality.

Potential employers look for experience but sometimes what is more important than experience are the intangibles. When we interview we look to see if a potential employee is professional, passionate, experienced and has the “can do” attitude. No employer has any tolerance for employees who “know it all.”

My advice is to be humble and always ask if anything else is needed once you complete your job and be respectful to your fellow coworkers and supervisors while you are on the job. Learn from your peers and always be a team player.

For the past year, we’ve been on a rollercoaster ride. Last April, Acrobat’s social business came to a stand still and we’re still trying to recover. Worse, the holiday season was extremely weak. I was at the point where I had to make extensive cuts, or risk riding out the storm. Does any of this sound familiar to you?

Faced with this tough decision, I decided to do neither. I took the economic challenge as an opportunity and I hired when nobody was hiring. I committed to marketing when others were cutting it and I built strategic alliances. I’m seeing the difference. Acrobat’s business is up nearly 10% and we’re venturing into new vertical markets.

Staffing, as an industry, is ahead of the curve in both a downturn and recovery which means that other businesses may trend slower. In general, this is still an excellent time to gain market share. What are you doing to position yourself for a recovery rather than a downturn? –Steve Scher, Owner

In today’s economy you can take either a passive approach or be aggressive as it pertains to growing and maintaining your business. You must stay on top of your business and look for ways to run your business efficiently. You must be disciplined to be able to manage your P&L on a weekly basis and always look for ways to enhance your customers experience without truly affecting your bottom line. Embrace technology and use it to your advantage. VOIP (voice over Internet protocol) is now becoming a mainstream vehicle for companies who have multiple offices. We are in the midst of converting our 4 offices to VOIP. Having this technology will provide a better customer experience and provide a consistent experience whether you are calling San Francisco, San Jose, Sacramento, or San Diego. Another technology we have launched at Acrobat Outsourcing is the ability to pay our employees as fast as possible by offering Pay Cards (Cash Cards). This technology dowloads an employees paycheck directly to a debit/credit card which gives our employee the ability to visit any ATM and cash their check. No more paper checks and no more going to cash checking companies to cash check and paying large fees.

It was always a dream of mine to own my own business. I wanted something that would leverage my experience, a service or product that I was passionate about, and most importantly, I wanted to be able to make a difference. Through-out my career I worked for some very large corporations, as well as some smaller companies. I had the opportunity of working for some very special people who I considered mentors as well as for other folks who I considered learning experiences.

In 2005 I was ready for the next challenge in my life where I wanted to take all the experiences I developed through out the years and leverage it to my own company. It was at this time that I stumbled across a business that was for sale called Acrobat Outsourcing. At the time, it was a small boutique temporary staffing company that specialized in foodservice/hospitality. I decided that Acrobat Outsourcing was my future and I was willing to invest my life savings into buying this business. It was located in the heart of the Tenderloin. Based on the fact that I had 20 years direct hospitality/foodservice experience and my greatest stregnth is my people skills it was a no brainer. In addition, I had spent the last 4 years in a sales capacity building a companies footprint in the hotel industry. I was really excited about Acrobat Outsourcing. I had a vision of taking this small boutique staffing company and growing it into something special.

Based on my skill set, I knew I had what it takes to grow this business. What I didn’t realize about this business when I bought it was the affect it would have on people. I realized that within a short time, I was changing peoples lives by giving them work or opportunities that they would normally not be able to get on there own. I was working with a very diverse group of people. My temporary employees come from all walks of life. Whether it be an employee that was looking for a second chance on life or a 5 star Executive Chef looking to pick up extra work. It didn’t matter because we had work for them as long as they have the work ethic and commitment to represent themselves and Acrobat in the highest regard. Also, owning a small business gives you the opportunity of doing things your own way and taking risks. I am proud to say that I am willing to take a chance on an employee who may have had a “checkered past” but also has the determination of changing their life around for the better and making an honest living. By the same token, before I would even take a chance on an employee with a “checkered past” they have to prove to me and my team that they are ready for the responsibility of a job by completing life skills and receive recommendations from their community. The best part of owning this company is when one of my temporary employees comes up to me and says “Because of Acrobat, I now have a full-time job where I am supporting my family and making an honest living.” My response is always the same. Acrobat Outsourcing can give you the opportunity. It’s up to you to make the most out of it.

I have now owned this company for three and a half years and I am proud to say that we have come a long way. I now have 4 offices (San Francisco, San Jose, Sacramento, and San Diego) and have employed over 2000 employees per year on a temporary basis. We work with California’s most well known companies and our business is continuing to grow despite what the economy is saying. That only happens when you are diligent about financial decisions that effect your company and you take care of your employees. Three years ago nobody knew who we are. Today we are a force to be reckoned with.

–Steve Scher, Owner
